Funding secured for 3,000 mph hypersonic aircraft that will fly from New York to London in 90 minutes

An American aerospace startup has revealed an early concept of a supersonic commercial plane.

Aerospace firm Hermeus has won funding to develop aircraft capable of flying more than five times the speed of sound.

The company says the plane will reach speeds of 3,000 mph and will be able to fly passengers from New York to London in 90 minutes.

Production will rely mostly on existing technology and materials.

According to Chief Operating Officer, Skyler Shuford, the concept would be a 20-person aircraft targeting the private jet market or business class travellers.

Hermeus are targeting an 8- to 10-year time frame, with a functional demo version ready in the next five years.

The Atlanta-based startup was set up by alumni from Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos-backed aerospace company Blue Origin.

The majority of funding was received from venture capital firm, Khosla Ventures, although the exact amount has not been publicly disclosed.

“Hermeus is developing an aircraft that not only improves the aviation experience with very reduced flight times, but also has the potential to have great societal and economic impact,” said Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures.
